BREAKING | Lady Rocks net funding in bid to get girls Active!

March 20, 2019

Today the Lady Rocks Basketball Club are delighted to announce that the National Lottery Community Fund (formerly BIG Lottery Fund) and sportscotland have allocated £9,000 in funding to support the development of our Lady Rocks Get Active initiative!

In an aim to get girls aged 8-12 years more physically active, the club designed and piloted a new initiative in the form of Lady Rocks Get Active and worked with Baird Memorial and Glenboig Primary Schools to engage dis-engaged girls in basketball. During the first pilot phase the programme maintained a retention rate of 96%.

'Our Lady Rocks Get Active programme has proven to be effective so far in increasing the number of girls taking part in basketball at the grass-roots level. This has been seen in the solid retention rate during the pilot phase of the programme. Now, it's about how we can continue to keep these girls involved in basketball, involved in our club and how we further develop their physical, mental and emotional health & wellbeing." - Josh Anderson, Club Development Officer.

The programme has now been given a cash injection by the National Lottery Community Fund and sportscotland as the club looks to roll out the programme to a number of new schools across North Lanarkshire.

"Having Lady Rocks coaching in the school has been an excellent experience for our pupils. The girls have grown in confidence in sport activities both in the curriculum and out with school hours. The children really enjoy their club and talk positively about their involvement in it. The girls have discovered a new sport and have enjoyed the opportunity to play competitively. The ethos of the Lady Rocks is outstanding and their inclusive practices are commendable. The school are made to feel part of the Lady Rocks community, we have developed strong relationships which benefit our pupils." - Catriona Calvert, Headteacher of Glenboig Primary School.
