The 2018/2019 season is nearing an end as we come to the business end of the year- the 2019 Scottish Playoffs! Today, after finishing 5th in the league, your U16 Lady Rocks would face off agaisnt 4th place Knights-Fury Central in the Quarter Final of the 2019 Scottish Playoffs, held at St Maurice's High School. Despite the game being at our home court, the Lady Rocks were the designated 'away' team for this one.
It was a very slow start for the Lady Rocks as Knights-Fury Central (KFC) dominated the first quarter, taking an early 4-0 lead. After several minutes of frantic play, the only wide open opportunities the Lady Rocks could get at basket came from free-throw attempts, which we failed to convert on.
With only four minutes to play in Q1, the score was 9-1 in favour of KFC. Following a KFC timeout, the Lady Rocks would begin to claw back into the match and keeping the deficit to a 10-point difference.
END Q1 | Knights-Fury Central 15-5 Lady Rocks
The second quarter would be the stage where the Lady Rocks would begin to find some momentum, start the Q by inbounding the ball, moving it around the key and finding a wide open
Rafferty for three! On the following possession Lady Rocks would steal the ball, advance up court at pace and find a wide open Dunsire cutting down the lane for two; Rocks were beginning to close the gap!
However, KFC refused to go away and after putting together several stops, all of which lead to scores, the deficit was once again back to 10 points. Timeout Lady Rocks.
Coming out of the timeout, Lucy Rafferty would begin to catch fire from mid-range as she nailed the 3-pointer from the top of the arc. The Lady Rocks would continue to find the Rafferty as she knocked down a further two attempts, both inside the 3-point arc at the high post and on the baseline. KFC's lead was narrowing and the Rocks faithful began to turn up the noise!
Defensive intensity improved for the Lady Rocks as the quarter neared a close, leading to excellent ball movement from the Lady Rocks and resulting in another Rafferty 3-point score, and baskets from Brown and Dunsire. The atmosphere was electric!
HT | Knights-Fury Central 26-23 Lady Rocks
Nice ball movement by the Lady Rocks to start Q3, including a heroic out-of-bound save by Niamh Ruddy, allowed the Cumbernauld side to create several easy opportunities to score early on, but to no avail.
The Lady Rocks defensive pressure continued to mount as the KFC offence continued to crumble. Niamh Ruddy with the interception in the back court, breaks up court and draws contact; converts 1/2 at the line.
Lucy Rafferty, who was on fire in the second quarter, continued to trail blaze in the 3rd with
several high-post scores and defensive rebounds for the Lady Rocks! Rafferty would eventually finish the game on 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Rafferty with the huge 3-point score to bring the Lady Rocks within a point of KFC, score now 30-29. After a great steal by Niamh Ruddy in the front court and an entry pass to Dunsire for two, the Rocks had their first lead of the game!
From this point, the Lady Rocks started to push forth and force KFC into multiple forced shots, all of which Rocks took advantage of on the offensive end of the floor. The quarter ended with a great jump shot from Niamh Ruddy in the lane for two.
END Q3 | Knights-Fury Central 36-41 Lady Rocks
The Lady Rocks score immediately to start the fourth quarter as Ferguson made a great inbound bass to Brown cutting down the sideline. From here, however, several minutes of frantic play would ensue.
The match started to get heated as KFC #5 would be called for a Technical foul mid-way through
the fourth, resulting in her fifth personal foul. Rafferty would convert on the free-throw. Fury call for a timeout.
Coming out of the timeout the Lady Rocks would turn the ball over, only to regain it seconds later after forcing KFC into a difficult shot attempt.
Lady Rocks would continue to move the ball well on offence, finding a wide open Rafferty again for three! The following offensive possession again the Lady Rocks would find Rafferty for the score, this time in the corner.
After a stellar few minutes of defensive intensity, and converted shots on the offensive end of the floor, the result was never in doubt for your U16 Lady Rocks!

"Today was about building on the progress the team has been making all season and doing what the
players have been good at; which is working together and competing. KFC have some very strong players and it was a very competitive game. We always focus on staying together no matter the score. That was evident today from all of the players." - Tony McDaid, U16 Lady Rocks Head Coach
