Beattie impresses as Lady Rocks fall to Wolves in Cup Final

February 2, 2019

Your U18 Lady Rocks suffer their first defeat of the 2018/2019 season today as they fell to West Lothian Wolves 51-49 in the 2019 Scottish Cup Final. A match that was mostly dominated by the Lady Rocks slipped away from the Cumbernauld side in the dying minutes of the games, allowing the West Lothian side to claim the silverware.

The Lady Rocks started off the match by showing why they are sitting in first place in the SBC, going 8-0 in the first couple of minutes of play. The first quarter, however, would not be a particularly high scoring affair as neither side capitalised on their opportunities around the basket.

END Q1 | West Lothian Wolves 1-9 Lady Rocks

Captain Shannon Beattie, who finished the game with 20 points and 15 rebounds, would continue to force the issue in the second quarter. Scoring, rebounding, stealing or making assists- the Wolves had no answer for Beattie!

Late Q2 would see the West Lothian side go on a scoring run of their own as they would bring the game back to a 1-point lead for the Cumbernauld side. Wolves would continue to improve

their defensive efforts late Q2, eventually taking their first lead of the game, 21-20.

Again, up stepped Shannon Beattie who would drive down the key to regain the lead for the Lady Rocks. Beattie, on the following offensive possession, would extend our lead to 3.

But Wolves were not to be out done... some nice ball rotation would find a wide open Wolves player for the three- tie game!

HT | West Lothian Wolves 23-23 Lady Rocks

West Lothian Wolves got the 3rd quarter underway by scoring off the inbound play. Lady Rocks would reply from deep with a 3-point make by Chloe Dunsire.

The 3rd quarter, very much like late Q2, would be a back and forward affair; Wolves taking lead by 1, Rocks taking the lead by 1.

Thanks to some nice plays by Beattie, Faleu and Loughran, the Lady Rocks began to increase their lead over the Wolves late Q3, however this did not last long. Wolves would finish Q3 on a strong scoring run and going into the Q3 break with a narrow one point lead.

END Q3 | West Lothian Wolves 41-40 Lady Rocks

The Lady Rocks started the fourth quarter by taking the lead off of a strong drive down the key by Faleu, 41-42! Wolves, however, would reply on the other end of the floor.

Beattie once again stepped up to the mark for the Lady Rocks by drawing contact along the baseline drive and scoring, free-throw dropping as well. Rocks lead by 2, 43-45.

Our narrow lead was short lived as Wolves would hit the 3 on the other end of the floor to once again take a one point lead in the game.

After several minutes of frantic play from both teams, and Lady Rocks now firmly in foul trouble,

Faleu would give the Rocks a narrow one point lead after an incredible off-balance shot connected with the backboard.

Lady Rocks would commit the foul on the defensive end of the floor. Wolves made 1/2 at the line to tie the game at 49.

In the dying seconds of the game, and after timeouts from both teams, the Lady Rocks would regain possession of the ball with 10 seconds remaining after forcing Wolves into a missed shot. However, a turnover by the Cumbernauld side would allow the team in white to break and score.

Lady Rocks would call timeout with 4.8 seconds remaining and trailing by two points. It wasn't to be though as the Wolves came away with the upset.
