U18 Lady Rocks defeat Phoenix to remain top!

January 16, 2019

St Maurice's High School was the place to be on Sunday 13th January as Perth Phoenix took on your U18 Lady Rocks! The previous two outings vs Phoenix were absolute classics, one of which went to overtime!

The Lady Rocks started the match by winning the jump ball and moving the ball well on offence, finding Faleu with the strong drive down the key for 2-points. Rocks immediately force Perth into a turnover in their own backcourt, allowing the Rocks to extend their lead to four points courtesy of a Ciara Burns layup.

The Lady Rocks continued to move the ball well in the first quarter, creating lots of easy shots in and around the basket, but to little avail. Perth Phoenix would go on a late run in Q1 to remain narrowly behind the Lady Rocks.

A step back from Loughran for 2-points towards the end of the quarter meant the Lady Rocks would finish the period with a six point advantage over the Perthshire side.

END Q1 | Lady Rocks 16-10 Perth Phoenix

A frantic few minutes of play to start Q2 as the Lady Rocks continued to create lots of easy shots, but nothing was falling for the Cumbernauld side. Thankfully Phoenix continued to struggle with the defensive efforts of the Lady Rocks.

After having a relatively quiet 1st quarter, Sophie Loughran stepped up to the mark by commanding the offensive and defensive boards, scoring several points and forcing Perth into multiple turnovers in their own backcourt. This allowed the Lady Rocks to continue growing their lead.

A nice backdoor cut from Beattie for two from a Faleu assist, an excellent spin layup from Loughran and a chasedown block from Brown forced the Perthshire side into a late Q2 timeout.

Coming out of the timeout the Lady Rocks continued to improve their defensive efforts, stealing the ball and converting. We again continued to find Loughran on the low post, who again stepped back and scored for two! Loughran again forced the turnover from Perth, allowing Beattie to convert for two along the baseline.

The Lady Rocks start the 3rd quarter by finding Loughran on the low post who spins on her defender and scores. Nice entry pass from Faleu. The Lady Rocks forced Perth into a turnover at the half; Faleu pushes the pace and threads the needle finding Dunsire cutting backdoor for 2-points!

Our defensive intensity remained strong throughout the 3rd quarter as our lead continued to grow and Perth struggling to cope. Multiple Perth turnovers including a 24-second violation allowed your Lady Rocks to extend the lead even further.

Our ball rotation on offence remained on point as we find Dunsire at the top of the arc for three! Dunsire would again light it up from three only seconds later after we forced Perth into a difficult shot attempt.

Beattie puts up the shot but misses, but a great offensive rebound by U16 player Emma Dunsire who immediately makes a no look pass to Beattie cutting down the lane for 2-points!

Beattie, on the following playing, would make a strong drive down the lane for 2!

END Q3 | Lady Rocks 60-23 Perth Phoenix

A chaotic first minute of the fourth quarter as everytime we scored, Perth immediately replied. A totally different Perth side from the first three quarters of the game.

After improved defensive efforts from Lady Rocks and a nice baseline drive and score from Faleu, Perth call timeout. We continued to make life very difficult for Perth coming out of the timeout as we further extended our lead.

Sophie Loughran would continue to impress in the fourth quarter as she scores an off-balance layup along the baseline, then immediately steals the ball on the Perth inbound pass and finds Shannon Beattie for three!

The game began to run away from Perth late Q4 as the Lady Rocks put together a run of scores, topped off by an excellent full court pass from Faleu to Burns for 2!
