Season Review | U12 and U14 Lady Rocks

April 2, 2018

With the 2017/2018 now concluded we caught up with U12 and U14 Head Coach, Josh Anderson,

to gather his views on the past year:

What has been the biggest takeaway from working with U12 and U14 squads this season?

"Witnessing the growth of every player on both squads! We've had a really positive season with both squads, exceeding expectations and having fun along the way.

I believe we have a great group of U12 and U14 girls who have shown time and again their willingness to get better through work hard, working consistently and as a team. I'm excited for what the future holds for these girls"

Going into the season you were asked to take on the Head Coach role of an U14 team that only had 6 returning players from the previous year. How did you feel about this and was this a challenge to you?

"I don't think any coach goes into a season not wanting their team to win a high number of games or trophies, but for me at this crucial age where more girls drop out of sport than remain, I made it

my goal of consistently pulling the girls' focus towards working hard, developing a plan to work more consistently, working as a team, and most importantly having fun! I don't believe it is by chance that by doing these things that the girls won the West Regional Development League undefeated, reached the Scottish Cup Semi Final and came 4th at the 2018 National Challenge winning 3 out of 4 games.

I also saw this as a great opportunity to start including our U12 girls into the U14 squad in preparation of the 2018/19 season. I really challenged the young U12 girls to embrace the challenge and prove to themselves that they really can hold their own with the older players, and boy have they done just that!

This was the first season the Lady Rocks had a recognised U12 team, something previously delivered on an ad-hoc basis by the Academy programme. What was it like leading this new section of the club?

"A privilege! We have an outstanding group of U12 Lady Rocks who will soon move on to the U14 squad. Their resilience, work ethic and overall enthusiasm towards their teammates and the club as a whole has been particularly pleasing to witness!

The girls have fully immersed themselves in the life of the club, attending basketball camps and Friday night matches! They really are a special group to work with, but this is only the beginning for them!

I will say though it has been down to the great work of our Gladiator Rocks Academies in preparing this group of girls up to this point, and long may we see our Academies continue their great work at the grass-root level!"

How would you describe the parental support this season?

"Incredible! Our parents have supported the team faithfully and vocally all season long, attending every home and away match, regardless of the location, the time of day or even the weather! Without the support of our parents then what we hope to achieve, and have achieved so far with this group of girls, would be/have been very difficult!"
