The Lady Rocks U16 Women have seen out the 2017/2018 regular season with a victory over West of Scotland rivals, St Mirren! The Lady Rocks finish out the regular season in 2nd place and preparations now begin for the 2018 playoffs, which commence Sunday 11th March at Scotland's National Performance Centre, Oriam Edinburgh.
A strong start for the Lady Rocks in Q1 saw the Cumbernauld side jump out to an early 12 point lead off the back of strong transition defence. Some nice offensive cuts from Carla Crowther lead to easy scores at the basket. An timeout from St Mirren stopped the Lady Rocks momentum for a short period of time, before the Rocks again stepped up with strong defence to increase their lead.
Another strong start for the Lady Rocks going into Q2, leading to early fastbreak lay ups. St Mirren coming out with a much improved defensive plan in Q2, stopping the Lady Rocks half-court offence and themselves creating easy fastbreak layups. A timeout from Coach McDaid late in Q2 gave the Rocks the chance to re-group and re-focus for the remaining 3:25 of the quarter. Both sides came out of the Rocks timeout with improved defensive intensity, but ultimately it was the Rocks side that proved to have the better defence, and off of an Abbie Taylor buzzer beating 3 point shot, the Rocks created a 20 point lead heading into the halftime break.
The Rocks started off the 3rd quarter with a 15-2 scoring run with Carla Crowther contributing with 13 of the 15 points. Great defence from the Lady Rocks allowed the Cumbernauld side to maintain their commanding lead throughout the entire third quarter, with the lead not dropping below 25 points for the entire period. St Mirren tried to stage a small comeback towards to end of the period but the Rocks transition, as was the case in the 1st half, proved to be too difficult for the Paisley side to break.
An excellent start to Q4, this time from the slightly younger players on the Lady Rocks squad, moving the ball well on offence creating some nice early opportunities for the girls! Carla Crowther continued with her offensive dominance, scoring 3 early baskets! The St Mirren offensive and defensive woes continued as the Rocks continued to extend their lead and exert their dominances throughout the remainder of the 4th quarter! The younger players on the Lady Rocks squad did a great job seeing out the match for the Lady Rocks!
Lady Rocks 93-45 St Mirren
