WBBL Match Report - Gladiators 65 vs Riders 68

It’s match day for the Caledonia Gladiators as they take on the Leicester Riders at the Emirates arena.

The Gladiators are 3-0 in the league including yesterday’s win over the Seven Oaks Suns! The MVP from that game was Radka Stasova and she will be looking to make a massive impact again today!

The Riders are also looking strong in the league this season with them making a 2-1 start to the league.

Radka opens the scoring for the Gladiators from a flawless three in the corner. The Riders would quickly answer back with a long range 2. Abbie Wolf then scores an excellent hook shot. Radka shows why she was MVP last night as she leads all scorers with 9 points in the first 6 minutes of the game!

At the end of the first quarter the scores are standing at 26-21 in favour of the Gladiators. Radka with an excellent contribution from the start with Chantelle Handy firing in from range too. Olina Squires leads the Leicester scoring with 11.

Heading into the second quarter Handy keeps up her scoring habit by scoring another 3 from deep range! Leicester keep fighting back and have also found their range from three, Squires shooting 3 from 5 beyond the arc so far. Gladiators start to flex their muscles as they open up a 12-point gap with 3 minutes left in the half! Chantelle Handy continuing to prove why she is a deadly 3-point shooter as she has made 3 out of 4 so far! Teá Adams extends the lead through a euro-step that sends the defender the wrong way before laying in a cool finish!

At halftime the scores are standing at 46-30, with Erin Jones scoring a nothing-but-net three pointer to end the half with excellent ball movement from Chantelle Handy. The Gladiators have certainly been practicing their 3-point shooting in training this week as they have nailed 71% of them so far! Radka still leads the scoring at half-time with 11 points.

The Riders start the much stronger of the two, scoring 8 unanswered points to start the 3rd quarter. Gladiators promptly call a time out to collect themselves. Leicester continues to pile of the pressure, Gladiators yet to score in the 3rd quarter with 5 minutes to go. As it stands it is a 2-point game. Gladiators begin to chip away at the score once again as Robyn Lewis drains a 3 just as the shot clock runs out! Extending our lead back to 8-points with 2 minutes left in the quarter. The quarter ends 54-48, a massive quarter remains for the Gladiators to see out this win, momentum very much with the Riders.

Heading into the fourth quarter, it’s a slow start from both teams, only 1 point had been scored in the first 3 minutes before Leicester get an and-one opportunity from the line, making it a tie game if they convert. Fortunately for the Gladiators they miss the free throw. Radka then gets a steal on the halfway line and is fouled in the act of shooting as she secures a 3-point play! The Riders come back into it quickly and tie up the game, 59-a-piece with 3 minutes on the clock!

With the clock running down, Leicester begins to break away, Gladiators made a late push but couldn’t find the angle for a last second 3-pointer to tie up the game. A tough loss for the Gladiators who dominated the first half but the fatigue from two games in two days may have got the better of them.

A fantastic game nonetheless with a superb quality of basketball on show at the Emirates.
