Match Report - Gladiators vs Scorchers BBL CUP

The Gladiators sail to an opening night win against the Surrey Scorchers as Darian Adams and Fraser Malcolm guide Caledonia to an 81-72 victory!

The last time these two sides met was on April 1st this year, the Gladiators won 107-77 with Jordan Johnson with a strong 28 point performance in the BBL Champoinship, Caledonia also won by 41 points last December featuring Jaycee Hillsman and Jordan Johnson combine for 65 points.

In tonight's match, Surrey got us underway as they won the opening tip and ex-Gladiator Boban Jacdomni got a midranger to fall to get the first points of the game.

Darian Adams quickly struck back for the Gladiators as he knocks down a three pointer to give the Gladiators the lead.

The energy from Caledonia was infectious from everyone on the court, everyone was up contesting rebounds, grabbing offensive boards and made it very difficult for the Scorchers to score, their leading scorer for the first quarter was Jalen Ray with five points, on the other side of the court, Darian Adams scored 13 points with two three point conversions.

Bunyan got into early foul trouble, two fouls within thirty seconds of stepping onto the court for the first time, Kyle Jiminez also has some sloppy turnovers as he makes his return to the organisation.

End of the first period, Gladiators 23-15 Scorchers.

Surrey got off to a quick start, buckets from Jalen Ray and Padiet Wang got their deficit down to two but Darian Adams and Ali Fraser got the lead back up to six which included a dunk by Fraser where Sloan crosses it over before going into the paint with a sweet crossover, bounces it down to Fraser as he slams it home.

The energy carried on from the first quarter and it only got hotter, near the end of the quarter, the Gladiators picked up momentum and got a 12 point lead to end the first half, only one Scorcher bucket in the final three minutes.

In the first quarter, Sloan wasn’t selfish and gave up an easy layup which wasn’t converted by his teammate but with 1:17 left on the clock in the first half, he made sure to lay it home as he gave the Gladiators a 10 point lead, he then gets an easy drive to go as he makes it a 12 point lead going into half time!

The score going into half-time was 43-31 to the Gladiators, leading that charge was debutant Darian Adams, 19 points in the first half to assert your dominance on the court in the BBL Cup season opener.

In 17 minutes, Adams had his 19 on a field goal percentage of 60% with two three’s, he also managed to get two assists and two defensive boards whilst getting fouled three times.

Ali Fraser managed to score nine points in the first half, a real force in the paint with a block and two rebounds.

The Gladiators shot the ball better in the first half, 16/33 (48%) from the field, 13/22 (59%) with two pointers but it was the Surrey Scorchers with the marginally better three point percentage, 3/10 (30%) with the Gladiators with 3/11 (27%)

The start of the second half featured buckets from both sides, the lead remaining between 10 and 12 in the favour of the Gladiators.

The Scorchers did get back into the game, the lead getting cut all the way down to five but the lead was never in question, it went back up to nine, even up to twelve for a brief period but the third quarter ended with the Gladiators up by seven as it was 62-55.

Bucket for bucket start to the fourth quarter, difficult to separate the teams until Malcom got an and-one to go before captain Bunyan gets a falling midrange to go, extending the lead to 10 before the Scorchers call a timeout.

The Gladiators really living up to the definition of the new name, staying strong and formidable as they matched the points of the Scorchers, Bunyan cancelled out all momentum the Scorchers got from their three pointer from [] as Bunyan knocked down one of his own before Bailey converted an and-one and Tape tipping away a Scorchers pass and slamming down an emphatic put back dunk.

With a 12 point lead with just under three minutes to go, the Gladiators had wrapped up their victory, the Scorchers managed to get it down to nine but it was too late for a run as the Gladiators won the opening game of the season and the first game under the new branding.

The Gladiators kept the great shooting up, 33/70 (47%) from the field and 28/47 (59%) from two-point range, the Scorchers bested them from downtown with 8/21 (38%) three point percentage.

Gladiators dominated in all the statistical categories, 37 rebounds to Surrey’s 36, 17 assists to 13, 11 steals to 4, 4 blocks to 2 and fifteen turnovers to 20, a really strong performance to strike the fear into teams around the league.

Tonight's MVP was Fraser Malcolm, a great performance with 15 points, five rebounds, one assist, three steals and one block. Malcolm found home with a backdoor cut which he kept using to his advantage to draw in three and-one opportunities. Incredible start to this new season for Fraser!

Darian Adams was another standout in tonight's game, the debutant finished with 19 points, two rebounds and four assists. Incredible scouting from the Gladiators to bring these guys in and, hopefully, push further into the competitions this season.

A 81-72 victory is how the Caledonia Gladiators start the BBL Cup campaign for this season, a first professional victory under the new name. Our next game is on the 5th of October against the London Lions down south, we hope to see you guys there!
